The best rock sliders for your 4Runner mount to the frame, shield the rocker panels from rock strikes, and hold up to real trail use. Cali Raised LED builds bolt-on rock sliders for both the 5th gen 4Runner (2010-2024) and 3rd gen 4Runner (2003-2009), available in Trail Edition and Step Edition styles with three finish options.
The 4Runner's factory running boards and step rails are plastic and thin sheet metal. They crush, crack, and gouge the rocker panel the first time you slide across a boulder or drag across a shelf rock. A proper rock slider replaces that weak point with laser-cut steel tube welded to a frame-mounted bracket that takes the hit and keeps moving.
The rocker panel is one of the most expensive body repairs on a 4Runner. A single rock strike on a factory running board can deform the rocker, compromise the door seal, and create a rust entry point. Rock sliders stop that from happening. They also give you a stable platform to step on when getting in and out, and they allow you to use the truck as a pivot point on steep sidehills without risking body damage.
Frame mounting is the critical spec. Cali Raised LED sliders bolt to the 4Runner frame using existing mounting hardware. The load from a rock strike transfers into the frame, not the body. Bolt-on installation means no drilling, no permanent modification, and a clean install that comes off if you ever need it to.
This is the question we hear most often. The answer depends on how you split your time between the trail and the street.
The Trail Edition mounts at a 20-degree inward angle. That tuck pulls the slider close to the body and maximizes ground clearance. The angled position lets rocks deflect under the truck rather than catching on the slider. There is no flat step surface on the Trail Edition. It is built for maximum clearance and real trail protection. If you wheel hard and do not need the slider as a daily step, this is the one.
The Step Edition mounts flat, at zero degrees. A flat step plate bolts to the top tube and gives you a solid surface to stand on when entering or exiting the truck. For daily drivers, families, or anyone who loads gear and gets in and out multiple times a day, that step matters. The Step Edition still provides full rocker protection and takes rock strikes just as well, but the geometry works for street use too.
If maximum clearance and trail-focused geometry is your priority, pick Trail Edition. If you want both rocker protection and a daily-use step, pick Step Edition. Both are built to the same steel spec and carry the same structural warranty.
The kick out refers to the rear end of the outboard slider tube. On a kick out configuration, the rear tube end flares outward away from the body. On a no kick out setup, the tube stays parallel to the body and ends flush.
The kick out does two things on trail. It acts as a deflector if you come across rocks from an angle, directing the slider up and over rather than digging in at the rear. It also adds a small amount of visual aggression that a lot of 4Runner owners prefer.
No kick out stays tucked. If you run tight, wooded trails with narrow gaps between trees or boulders, a no kick out profile reduces the chance of snagging. For open desert or rocky terrain without tight trees, the difference is minimal.
For most 4Runner builds doing a mix of terrain, kick out is the popular choice. For dedicated tight-trail rigs, no kick out keeps things clean and narrow.
All Cali Raised LED 4Runner sliders come in three finish options at different price points.
RAW is bare steel, no coating. It is the entry price point and the right choice if you plan to paint the sliders to match your body color, apply a custom Cerakote or rattle-can coating, or want full flexibility over the final look. RAW steel will develop surface rust without protection. If you order RAW, plan to coat the sliders before installation or shortly after. A basic spray-on rust inhibitor, paint, or wax will do the job until you apply your preferred finish.
Powder Coat is the most popular option for good reason. The sliders are bead-blasted and coated in a durable, textured black powder coat. They arrive ready to install, the coating is hard and chip-resistant, and the look works on every 4Runner build. If you do not have a specific finish plan, powder coat is the right call for most buyers.
Bedliner is the premium finish. A spray-on bedliner coating goes over the blasted steel and creates a thick, highly textured, corrosion-resistant surface. It is the toughest of the three options and holds up best in wet climates, salty winter roads, and humid coastal environments. The cost premium over powder coat is modest, and for owners in rough-weather climates it is worth the upgrade.

Cali Raised LED builds 4Runner sliders for two separate generations, and the fitments are not interchangeable.
The 5th gen (2010-2024) slider uses mounting points and geometry specific to that platform. This is the most popular fitment in the lineup and covers the widest range of build years. Both Trail and Step editions are available for the 5th gen.
The 3rd gen (2003-2009) uses a shorter wheelbase and different frame mounting geometry. Cali Raised LED builds dedicated sliders for the 3rd gen that account for those differences. Both Trail and Step editions are available here as well, with the same finish options and the same structural build quality.
Always confirm your year range before ordering. A 5th gen slider will not bolt to a 3rd gen frame, and vice versa.

Rock sliders protect the sides of the 4Runner. A front skid plate protects the oil pan, differential, and front crossmember from rocks coming in from under the front of the truck. Running both gives you coverage on two of the most vulnerable areas on the body.
The Cali Raised LED front skid plate for the 2010-2024 4Runner is CNC laser-cut from 3/16" steel, mounts without drilling, and installs using existing hardware. If you are already committing to sliders, adding a skid plate to the build is the logical next step for a complete underbody protection setup.

Do these 4Runner rock sliders require drilling?
No. Both the Trail Edition and Step Edition are bolt-on designs that use existing frame mounting points. No drilling or permanent modification required.
What is the difference between 5th gen and 3rd gen 4Runner sliders?
The 5th gen (2010-2024) and 3rd gen (2003-2009) have different wheelbases and frame mounting geometry. Cali Raised LED builds dedicated sliders for each generation. The products are not interchangeable, so confirm your year range before ordering.
Trail Edition or Step Edition: which should I choose?
Choose Trail Edition if you wheel hard and want maximum clearance with a tucked profile. Choose Step Edition if you also want a flat step for daily entry and exit. Both protect the rocker panel equally well.
Which finish option lasts longest?
Bedliner is the most corrosion-resistant finish, particularly in wet or salty climates. Powder coat is the most popular choice for most buyers and holds up well on trail. RAW requires you to apply your own coating to prevent surface rust.
Can I install these myself at home?
Yes. Most owners with basic hand tools can complete the installation. The sliders use existing hardware, no welding is required, and most installs take 2-4 hours per side.
Should I run kick out or no kick out?
Kick out is the most popular choice for mixed terrain and gives you a small deflection advantage on angled rock hits. No kick out is better for tight wooded trails where the narrower profile reduces the chance of snagging.
