DOM vs HREW Rock Sliders: Which Steel Is Right for Your Truck?

2005–2023 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition Rock Sliders by Cali Raised LED

If you're shopping for rock sliders and trying to decide between DOM and HREW tubing, here's the short answer: DOM is the stronger material, and it's the only tubing Cali Raised LED uses. We made that call because when your rocker panel meets a rock at speed, you want the tube that absorbs impact and springs back — not the one that dents. Here's why DOM wins, and what to watch for when comparing brands.

In this article

What is DOM tubing, and why does it matter for rock sliders?

DOM stands for Drawn Over Mandrel. The process starts with HREW tube and cold-draws it through a precision die and over a steel mandrel. That extra step does three things that matter for a rock slider:

  • Eliminates the weld seam. The cold-drawing process nearly removes the internal seam, making the tube structurally uniform all the way around.
  • Tightens wall tolerances. DOM tube maintains consistent wall thickness within 0.010 inch, so it behaves predictably under load.
  • Work-hardens the steel. The cold-draw process refines the grain structure and increases tensile strength above what the raw HREW tube started with.

The result is a tube that absorbs more impact before deforming. When a rock catches your slider at speed on a hard line, DOM is more likely to flex and spring back rather than dent or crack at the weld zone. It costs more to produce — which is why some brands cut corners with HREW — but the performance difference is real.

What is HREW tubing?

HREW stands for Hot Rolled Electric Welded. Steel strip is heated, rolled into a tube shape, and the seam is welded electrically. Unlike DOM, HREW skips the cold-draw step, so the weld seam remains, wall thickness varies slightly, and the steel is not work-hardened.

HREW is cheaper to produce, which is why budget rock slider brands use it to keep prices low. It's not worthless — for very light trail use it may hold up fine — but the weld seam is a weak point under hard impact, and the inconsistent wall thickness means you can't predict how it will perform when things get rough. If you're putting money into protecting your truck, HREW is a compromise you don't need to make.

Why DOM is the right choice

Rock sliders exist to protect your truck. The rocker panels are one of the most vulnerable and expensive areas to repair — and they're unibody on modern Toyotas, meaning serious damage affects the structural integrity of the whole vehicle.

When you're comparing sliders, ask the brand what tubing they use and what wall thickness. DOM at .120 inch wall is the benchmark. Anything less — whether HREW tubing or thinner walls — is a manufacturer cutting costs at your truck's expense.

Cali Raised LED uses .120 inch wall DOM tubing exclusively across every rock slider we make. Full-length frame attachment, no drilling, all hardware included.

Frequently asked questions

Is DOM stronger than HREW steel?

Yes. DOM tubing is cold-drawn over a mandrel, which eliminates the weld seam and work-hardens the steel. It's measurably stronger under high-impact loads. Cali Raised LED uses DOM exclusively because we won't build a protection product out of an inferior material.

What wall thickness should rock sliders be?

The standard for quality rock sliders is .120 inch wall tubing. Budget options often use .083 inch wall, which can dent or crack under hard impacts. Always confirm wall thickness before buying.

Do rock sliders replace nerf bars?

No. Nerf bars are entry and exit accessories. Rock sliders are structural protection, mounted to the frame to absorb direct hits and protect the rocker panels. They can include a step surface, but their primary job is protection, not convenience.

Can I install rock sliders myself?

Bolt-on sliders designed for your specific vehicle are a straightforward DIY install. You need basic hand tools, a floor jack, and about 2 to 3 hours. Cali Raised LED sliders are all bolt-on with no drilling required.

Do rock sliders affect ground clearance?

Trail-style sliders angle upward at roughly 20 degrees, sitting close to the rocker panels and preserving clearance. Step-style sliders extend further from the body. If maximum clearance is the priority, choose the Trail Edition.
