Why Every Overlander Needs a Bed Rack | Cali Raised LED Cali Raised LED
Why Every Overlander Needs a Bed Rack

Why Every Overlander Needs a Bed Rack

A bed rack gives you a dedicated platform above the truck bed for a rooftop tent, recovery gear, and lighting while keeping the bed floor open for cargo. For Toyota Tacoma and Tundra owners who want to maximize both storage and sleep space, a quality bed rack is the single most versatile upgrade on the truck.

What Does a Bed Rack Do?

A bed rack elevates your sleeping or storage platform above the bed floor, creating two separate use zones in your truck bed. The platform level handles rooftop tents, gear bags, water storage, and light bar mounts. The bed floor stays clear for coolers, recovery gear, spare tires, and tools. Without a rack, a rooftop tent occupies the entire bed floor and eliminates the truck's most practical storage area.

Beyond storage, a bed rack changes the geometry of your overlanding platform. A properly sized mid-height or tall rack positions an RTT at a comfortable entry height, reduces ladder length, and creates enough clearance underneath for the largest full-size coolers and pelican cases without stacking them.

How Do You Choose the Right Bed Rack Height?

Cali Raised LED offers three height options for most Tacoma platforms: low-profile, mid-height, and tall. Each serves a different use case:

  • Low-profile: The lowest center of gravity, best fuel economy impact, and cleanest look. Suits drivers who use the rack primarily for gear and light bar mounts without a rooftop tent. Clearance below the platform is limited for large items.
  • Mid-height: The most popular option for rooftop tent users. Provides enough clearance below the platform for most mid-size coolers and gear cases while keeping RTT entry height manageable. Works well on both stock-height and lifted Tacomas.
  • Tall: Maximum clearance below the platform for large items or tall coolers. Best for overlanders who need full access to deep storage bins or large cargo in the bed. RTT entry height is higher, which some users prefer for the view and some find less convenient.

For a stock-height Tacoma used as a primary overlanding truck, mid-height is the right starting point for most people. If you know you want to slide a large refrigerator fridge under the platform, measure it first and size accordingly.

What Is the Weight Capacity of a Bed Rack?

Cali Raised LED Overland Bed Racks support 800+ lbs static and 400+ lbs dynamic, which comfortably handles a two-person hard-shell RTT (typically 150-180 lbs), a full complement of gear bags, and roof-mounted accessories simultaneously. The rack uses heavy-wall steel tubing and mounts to the truck's existing bed rail stake pockets without drilling or modifying the factory bed.

Toyota Tacoma Bed Rack: Which Model Fits Your Truck?

Cali Raised LED builds bed racks for 2nd Gen Tacomas (2005-2015), 3rd Gen Tacomas (2016-2023), and the new-generation 2024+ Tacomas. Each generation uses different bed dimensions and stake pocket locations, so the racks are not interchangeable between generations. Short bed and long bed configurations are separate part numbers — make sure to select the correct bed length at checkout.

What Can You Mount on a Bed Rack?

The Cali Raised LED Overland Bed Rack uses square tube cross-members and upright legs compatible with standard aftermarket mounting hardware. Common additions include:

  • Rooftop tents: The most popular use. Any RTT with a standard base rail pattern mounts to the rack cross-members using T-bolt hardware. Soft tops and hard shells both work — verify the RTT's base rail spacing matches the rack's cross-member spacing before ordering.
  • Light bars: A 42-inch slim LED bar mounts to the front cross-member with standard U-bolt clamps, angled forward to illuminate the trail ahead of the cab. Some overlanders add a rear-facing bar for camp lighting.
  • Gear bags: Any bag with external handles accepts ratchet straps to the cross-members. For heavy bags, run two independent straps for redundancy.
  • Recovery boards: Maxtrax and similar recovery boards mount to the rack sides with the manufacturer's mounting brackets. Position them on the side you can access without climbing over the rail.
  • Awnings: Side-mounted awnings attach to the rack uprights using standard clamp-on hardware. A 6-foot awning on a mid-height rack provides solid camp shade at a comfortable height.

Toyota Tundra Bed Racks

Tundra owners get the same Overland Bed Rack system in configurations sized for the CrewMax bed dimensions. The wider and longer Tundra bed accommodates a larger RTT footprint, and the added weight capacity handles even fully loaded hard-shell tents without issue. CRL builds racks for both the 2014-2021 Tundra and the 2022+ generation, which uses a revised bed design.

Bed Bars vs. Full Bed Rack: Which Do You Need?

If a full bed rack feels like more structure than you need, Overland Bed Bars for the Tacoma offer a lower-commitment entry point. The bed bars span the bed rails at two or three cross-member positions and provide mounting points for lights and light accessories without the full platform height of a rack. They are lighter, easier to remove for hauling tall cargo, and cost less than a full rack. The trade-off is no rooftop tent capability and less overall mounting real estate.

If a rooftop tent is on your list now or in the future, go straight to the full bed rack. If you just want a clean way to mount a light bar and some recovery gear, bed bars are a solid option at a lower price point.

Does a Bed Rack Affect Driving or Fuel Economy?

An empty bed rack adds 70-100 lbs to the truck and raises the center of gravity slightly compared to loading the same weight in the bed floor. The handling difference is noticeable on aggressive cornering on loaded rigs but not significant in daily driving. Fuel economy with an empty rack is minimally affected. With a loaded hard-shell RTT at highway speed, expect a 1-3 mpg reduction depending on the tent's aerodynamic profile and how much time you spend above 60 mph.

Protecting the undercarriage is just as important as building the platform above. Once your bed rack is set, see our guide on skid plates for the Tacoma and 4Runner to protect the oil pan, transmission, and transfer case on the trail.

Frequently Asked Questions About Overlanding Bed Racks

What is the weight limit on a Toyota Tacoma bed rack?

The Cali Raised LED Overland Bed Rack supports 800+ lbs static and 400+ lbs dynamic. This exceeds the weight of any production rooftop tent plus gear on the platform simultaneously.

Do I need to drill into my truck to install a bed rack?

No. The CRL Overland Bed Rack mounts to the factory stake pockets in the bed rails. No drilling, welding, or permanent modification is required.

Can I still use my bed with a bed rack installed?

Yes. The rack legs sit at the outside edges of the bed, leaving the floor open. You can slide gear and equipment under the platform as normal. The only limitation is height clearance under the platform, which varies by the height option you select.

Does a bed rack work with a tonneau cover?

A full bed rack replaces a tonneau cover for the area it covers. Folding or roll-up tonneaus that stop at the rear legs can be used with a partial rack setup, but most users find the rack provides better weather protection through the RTT itself and gear bags rather than a tonneau.

How long does bed rack installation take?

Most installs take 1-2 hours with basic hand tools. The stake pocket mounts assemble and tighten without power tools, and the cross-members bolt to the uprights with the included hardware.
