There are so many ways you can enjoy Merus Adventure Park, from a day of Overlanding, off-roading, hiking, or mountain biking, there are tons of great packages!

To Access a full day at Merus Adventure Park ( 8 hours ) you will need to purchase a vehicle pass, these cost $25 per vehicle and each person within the vehicle will need to purchase the appropriate park pass, for adults and children over the age of 12 are $15 for a full day at the park!

The landscape quickly transforms from flat and empty to mountainous, lush, and filled with scenic views that stretch for miles. Inside the canyon feels like an entirely different world.

Merus Adventure Park offers incredible campsites, whether you want to set up camp on the rim for sweeping views of the canyon or get down inside the canyon for a more immersive experience.

On my recent trip, I camped at both the rim and canyon sites. Each has spectacular views, and neither is better than the other—I highly recommend experiencing both options!

Trail Ratings and Difficulty

The trails at Merus Adventure Park aren’t for the faint of heart. While there are beginner-friendly tracks, it’s always recommended to go with an experienced off-roader to ensure both your safety and your rig’s.

Trail Difficulty Breakdown:

• Green Circle – Beginner: Stock 4x4 vehicles are fine.
• Blue Square – Intermediate: Slightly lifted vehicles with 32”+ tires recommended.
• Black Diamond – Advanced: 2”+ lift kits and 35”+ tires recommended.
• Double Black Diamond – Highly Advanced: 3”+ lift kits, 37”+ tires, and lockers recommended.
• Purple Hexagon – Expert: High-clearance vehicles, 40”+ tires, and lockers required.

My Favorite Trails at Merus

Choosing a favorite trail at Merus is no easy task—it depends entirely on the type of adventurer you are!

As a photographer, I gravitate toward scenic trails that provide plenty of photo opportunities to showcase rigs and landscapes.

1. Mission Mars

• Rating: Easy
• Description: The landscape on this trail resembles the surface of Mars, making it a must-see for any visitor. It’s perfect for scenic views and epic photos.

2. The Drop-In

• Rating: Black Diamond (Advanced)
• Description: Short but thrilling, this trail features a death-defying drop off the rim into the canyon with steep descents, large drop-offs, and a 35-degree off-camber slope. It’s not for the faint of heart—or those afraid of heights!

3. Kate The Great

• Rating: Black Diamond (Advanced)
• Description: One of the longer trails in the park, this route offers steep inclines, jagged rocks, and tight turns. It’s guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat—literally!

Camp Life at Merus Adventure Park

Camp life at Merus is just as enjoyable as the time spent on the trails. After a day of off-roading, returning to base camp is yet another highlight of the adventure.

Camping on the Rim

Camping on the rim provides unmatched views of the canyon. At night, the unpolluted sky reveals stars and planets, making it a magical experience. The views make you feel small in the best way—reminding you of the beauty of nature.

Camping in the Canyon

Camping in the canyon is equally impressive. The cooler temperatures, steep cliffs, and unique landscape create a completely different vibe compared to the rim.

Weather Tips and Precautions

West Texas weather can be highly unpredictable, so preparation is key.

• Rim Camping Risks: Warmer temperatures but high winds. With no trees or structures to block the wind, make sure your gear is securely tied down.
• Canyon Camping Risks: Colder temperatures (10–20 degrees cooler) and flooding. The canyon can quickly fill with water, creating mudslides and turning easy trails into difficult ones.

My Weather Experience

On my trip, the weather took a dramatic turn. A forecast predicting light rain turned into tornado-force winds and heavy rainfall by 1 a.m.

I abandoned my rooftop tent and slept in my truck to avoid being blown into the canyon. Meanwhile, campers in the canyon faced flooding and slick trails, requiring vehicle recoveries throughout the night.

It was a wild reminder of how quickly conditions can change in West Texas!
