Overlanding can take you on the greatest adventures of your life - and sometimes a little magic happens that you won't expect. Mexico doesn't always make to the top of the list for Overlanding - but the team over at Overlander Mexico might be able to change your mind. Starting off as simply enthusiasts, the 5 friends decided to get a little more serious about their off-roading journeys, and with the help of Overlandbound, started the group "Overlander Mexico". But let them tell the story. Read on to learn more about why you should check out Baja!
Who is Overlander Mexico?
Overlander Mexico since January 2019 is a group of 5 friends 4 of us with overland Tacomas an a jeep! Our mission is to travel around Mexico sharing our experiences along with beautiful places, sometimes we can’t get together but we still do trips SOLO or with another groups, Overlander Mexico is a Dream come true!
We have been growing as pioneers of Overlanding here in Mexico, also having the pleasure of being sponsored by Maxxis tires! We can’t wait for our future plans! Big trips coming up this and next year like BajaExpedition 21!
What keeps you into overlanding?
I guess adventures and innumerable experiences! Every trip we learn something! Not all the expeditions are the same! Sometimes we had great experiences and some are pretty challenging ones! But at the end we as a family always conquer every situation!
Any scary or recovery moments?
Recovery, We actually didn't have to many recovery moments on the island. Its relativly simple to drive as long as your not stupid like i am. My truck "Smokey" got stuck on a dune when i was letting another vehicle by. I got high centered in the middle of one of the worst storms we would get the whole trip. We tried everything to free my truck from ropes to digging to even using the winch. News flash for anyone with a winch... If you have the heaviest vehicle and you also get stuck, your winch will only drag the recovery vehicle that's trying to get you out. So yeah, one truck turned into two stuck trucks in the middle of pouring rain and the biggest bugs you have ever seen. We eventually got out with a big rope and a tacoma going wayyyy too fast. but hey, We got free didn't we?1.
Tell us about your most recent trip, Why that location?
Baja was the best experience we ever had here in Mexico, our dream has always been driving all around Baja, this grew up watching some YouTube videos about some overland trips and locals sharing their culture, also XOVERLAND was a big inspiration for us! The coolest moment I guess is when we disembark from the ship, our route was from Topolopampo, Sinaloa to La Paz, Baja Sur, took a ferry for that! The first beach we saw was like a dream for us! Baja is a PARADISE! No scary moments, but we were always alert at night, but nothing to complain about! I got stuck on purpose to use my MAXTRAX for the first time 😅 nothing crazy and super easy to use!
Tell us about Baja. Why this trail? Any scary moments?

Out of all the trucks on the market, why tacoma?
Our favorite trail here in Mexico is in la Sierra gorda de Queretaro, beautiful place to enjoy nature, locals are kind, with a little challenging spots! At the end of the trail in the middle of the canyons there’s a Misión, called La Misión de Bucareli! Built in 1797. Our dream trail is I guess drive all the way to MOAB, UT we are planning this trip next year!
Out of all the off-roading vehicles, Why Tacoma ?
I had big experiences with Toyota, being almost indestructible! I’ve being 9 years off-roading with Tacomas, and only had 1 issue with one, and as you know a pickup truck have more space which means room to fit our overland gear and stuff! So, Tacoma because of its off-roading capacities, it’s reliable and it’s space
Until next time! At Cali Raised LED, we not only want to encourage riders to try something new, (with all the proper precautions of course!) but also to not be too shy when it comes to checking out trails that they may not have thought possible. It's in our very slogan, "Rise Up and Seek Adventure." We really mean it.
Thank you to Alexander Berger for sharing your story with us.
If you haven't figured it out yet, we've been featuring a trail or national park or other must see location each month of the year, and sometimes we are lucky enough to find other off-roaders who have been there. They are kind enough to share their experience and their expertise. Want to be featured? Have a trail you think we should feature? Submit your photos and story to partners@caliraisedled.com to be considered!
