The Cali Raised LED CR4403 Tailgate Theft Protector helps deter tailgate theft by shielding access to the passenger-side hinge and adding tamper-resistant security hardware. Made in the USA from laser-cut 304 stainless steel, it has an uncoated finish.

Fitment and compatibility

Fits 2024–2027 Toyota Tacoma models (4th Gen), all trims. Compatible with OEM and aftermarket bumpers. Does not fit 2023 or earlier Tacomas.

Installation and tools

Estimated installation time is under 10 minutes. The protector uses a factory mounting point and requires no drilling or cutting. Supply a 3/8-inch ratchet with a 10 mm socket and a 1/4-inch bit driver or ratchet that accepts the included security bit. Keep the bit for future removal. Tailgate Theft Protector Installation Instructions — CR4403

Install the Cali Raised LED Tailgate Theft Protector (CR4403) on your fourth-generation Toyota Tacoma using the instructions below. The protector helps deter tailgate theft by shielding access to the passenger-side hinge and adding tamper-resistant hardware.

Fitment and installation time

Fits 2024–2027 Toyota Tacoma (4th Gen), all trims. Does not fit earlier Tacomas. Estimated installation time: under 10 minutes. No drilling, cutting or modification required.

One protector plate
One security bolt
One security bit

Tools you supply

3/8-inch ratchet and 10 mm socket to remove the factory bolt
1/4-inch bit driver or ratchet that accepts the included security bit

Before you start

Park on level ground and lower the tailgate. The installation takes place on the passenger side with the tailgate down.

Installation photos show an earlier version with the CR logo cutout. The current version does not have the logo cutout. Installation is unchanged.

Installation steps

Locate the factory bolt. With the tailgate down, find the bolt at the bottom of the passenger-side bedside panel, at the tailgate hinge, just inboard of the taillight. That is the only bolt you touch. Leave the latch striker and the support-cable anchor above it alone.
Remove the factory bolt. Break the bolt loose with a 10 mm socket on your 3/8-inch ratchet, then spin it out with your fingers. Keep the factory bolt with your truck.
Line up the plate and start the security bolt. Hold the flat flange with the bolt hole against the bedside panel so its hole lines up with the empty factory bolt hole. Let the flange with the open half-round cutout wrap around the hinge. Put the included security bolt through the plate and start it by hand.
Run it hand tight. Turn the security bolt down with your fingers until the protector pulls in flat against the body. It threads into the same factory hole the old bolt came out of.
Tighten with the included security bit. Put the bit in a 1/4-inch bit driver or ratchet and snug the bolt until the plate sits flat and does not move. Do not over-tighten. If the hardware will not seat the way it should, stop and email support before you force it.

Check your work

The plate sits flat against the body, with no gap.
The plate does not move when you pull on it.
The tailgate opens, closes and latches normally.

Keep the security bit safe; it is needed to remove the plate.

Easy to install, does a great job of keeping the tailgate secure.

I did notice some corrosion forming after about a month of use. I fixed this using some Rust Stopper from ACE.

The entire installation took all of 1.5 minutes to secure the bolts to the screws. The video was extremely helpful for ensuring the correct orientation since the CR logo is no longer present. A great product for an extra piece of mind.

Piece of mind.

Technically I don't need this as I have a locking cover, but every once in a while I do have it open. And while tailgate thefts are not a big thing where I live, it's a small price to pay of added protection. As for the install, it took me maybe 3 minutes and that includes grabbing my tools and it seems to be well made. My only disappointment is the "CR" logo is no longer in the upper portion of the steel next to the screw and that makes the plate look quite generic.

Good quality

I have given a 4-star rating because the bolts were 5mm too long, requiring me to trim them. Using the original bolts would have caused the taillight to be pulled inward. This was for my 2025 Tacoma Trailhunter.

A great little piece of security!

The Cali Raised Tailgate Protector is a great little piece of extra security on my 2026 Tacoma TRD Off-road. This gets delivered stainless, so I painted mine matte black. Made for a super clean install! Just buy it!!

Simple, Effective, Peace of mind - Add elbow grease to make it perfect

This is a great product to help prevent a lousy crime that has increased in my neck of the woods. I've seen plenty of DIY options and none give me the same confidence, and for the price this can't be beat. The concept, delivery, and quality are all worthy of five stars - it arrived quickly, installed easily, and is made of high quality. There are a couple minor improvements that I think could be made.

The install instructions are found by scanning a QR code and watching a [quick] video. Not a big deal, but it's not a big install. A small paper insert with the part that provided the instruction would be nice. I just wanted to know what size socket I needed to take to my truck for the existing bolt, and I had to scan a QR code and watch a video just for that.

The finish on the bracket, at least in my case, was messy. The metal was dirty and some of the edges had decent scratches. Looks like it's cut face up because the backside is definitely better looking. It's not like this is a show piece, but I paid money for it and am putting it on my truck. Before install I just touched up the edges with emory cloth and cleaned the whole thing.

Lastly, while it doesn't impact my impression of the product at all, I opted to put a screw cover over the security bolt. I doubt thieves are walking around with security bits, and even if so a cap won't stop them, but a cap added a nice finish and one more step to slow a would be thief down (maybe???)

Must have anti theft Tailgate Protection!

This was the first think I bought after puchasing my Toyota Tacoma OR. I live in Los Angeles and its very common for tailgates to get stolen in my area. This is a must have and it was very easy to install. It gave me piece of mind knowing that my tailgate is now protected. I definitely recommend this product.
