Tailgate Theft Protector Installation Instructions — CR4423

Install the Cali Raised LED Tailgate Theft Protector (CR4423) on your 2022 and newer Toyota Tundra using the instructions below. The protector helps deter tailgate theft by shielding access to the passenger-side hinge and adding tamper-resistant security hardware.

Fitment and installation time

Fits 2022 and newer Toyota Tundra (3rd Gen), all trims, including SR, SR5, Limited, TRD Pro and Capstone. Estimated installation time: under 10 minutes. No drilling or cutting required. Clears OEM and most aftermarket rear bumpers.

Included in the kit

  • One protector plate (laser-cut 304 stainless steel, uncoated)
  • One supplied security bolt
  • One included security bit

Tools you supply

  • 10 mm socket or wrench (3/8-inch ratchet) to remove the one factory bolt
  • 1/4-inch bit driver or ratchet that holds the included security bit

Before you start

Park on level ground and lower the tailgate. The installation takes place on the passenger side with the tailgate down. A tailgate support cable runs across the work area; leave it alone.

Installation photos show an earlier version with the CR logo cutout. The current version does not have the logo cutout. Installation is unchanged. Installation footage is a customer's video, used with permission. The wrench and driver seen in the video are not part of the kit; you supply those.

Installation steps

  1. Locate the factory bolt. With the tailgate down, look at the rear-facing end panel of the passenger-side bedside. One small flange-head bolt sits immediately outboard of the tailgate-hinge bracket, level with the hinge pivot and just below the taillight lens. That single bolt is the only thing that comes out.
  2. Remove the factory bolt. Back that bolt out with a 10 mm socket or wrench and set it aside. Keep it with your truck.
  3. Set the protector in place. Hold the flat mounting tab against the panel so its hole lines up with the empty factory hole, and let the shield section wrap down over the tailgate hinge.
  4. Install the security bolt. Run the supplied security bolt through the mounting tab and into the factory hole, then tighten it with the included security bit until the plate sits flat and does not move. Do not over-tighten. If the hardware will not seat the way it should, stop and email support before you force it.

Check your work

  • The plate sits flat against the panel, with no gap.
  • The bolt is seated and the plate does not move when you pull on it.
  • The tailgate opens, closes and latches normally.

Keep the included security bit safe; it is needed to remove the plate.

Easy installation.

I bought this for my 26 Tundra, 2 minute install. Basically it replaces your bottom taillight screw with a security screw to hold the bracket. It certainly looks solid and fits well.

Make your Tundra tailgate tamper resistant

Make your Tundra tailgate tamper resistant with an easy install anti-theft bracket that fits right over your tailgate hinge on the right side. Secured with a special bolt that replaces your OEM bolt that attaches to the lower right inside of your bed that is bolted to the lower half of your taillight. No problems, easy install, especially if you aren't all thumbs with big hands like myself. It took me a few extra minutes to properly line up the security bolt so it wouldn't be tightened at an angle. A security tool is provided to use on the security bolt. You just need a socket wrench to complete the job. If you installed the bracket properly, it won't touch your hinge, so you don't have to worry about scraping any paint off your hinge.
